Ida Mae was a schoolteacher. The two had been married for just a few months when Frank was killed on Nov. 1, 1934.
He was killed in a shootout between federal agents and bank robbers, and he was working as a special agent for the F.B.I.
“His last dying words were, ‘No, brother. I’m not one of you.’” Ida Mae says.
At the time of his death, Frank Hammond was 48 years old. He left behind a widow, five young children — nine months to 3 years of age — and a girlfriend who was pregnant with their child.

A few days before the anniversary of the 1936 massacre, the Hammonds watched a story about their case that was presented on the FX series, The Americans.
"She thought it was so wrong," says Ida Mae Hammond. "The truth wasn't told."

Martin and Ida Mae Hammond was married in 1916 in Johnson County, Texas.
After his death, Ida Mae and the children made a new home in Amarillo, Texas.
Over the years, she became active in the local church and volunteered to give Sunday school at age of 75.
She also wrote a book about her husband's life. In 1982, she was awarded a fellowship by the Texas Institute of Letters.
"Her husband's children felt that she shouldn't talk about his work. They didn't feel comfortable discussing it. So, Ida Mae wrote the book, 'The Tangle of Loyalties.' It was based on true events."
