Ida Mae was a schoolteacher. The two had been married for just a few months when Frank was killed on Nov. 1, 1934. He was killed in a shootout between federal agents and bank robbers, and he was working as a special agent for the F.B.I. “His last dying words were, ‘No, brother. I’m not one of you.’” Ida Mae says. At the time of his death, Frank Hammond was 48 years old. He left behind a widow, five young children — nine months to 3 years of age — and a girlfriend who was pregnant with their child.
